Textile Techniques In Metal by Arline Fisch
This is pretty much the "bible" if you're interested in wire art jewelry. Although it's not your typical “how-to” book on woven wire jewelry techniques, it presents an overview of many woven techniques found around the globe. Most importantly, it shows the techniques in photos along with giving some basic how to information for some of the methods. This book has a very large number of pictures and examples as well as samples of different wire weaving techniques for wire art jewelry. A best reference book, Textile Techniques In Metal should be a favorite book in any serious wire art jeweler’s library.
Truly a classic, this book is one that you’ll find yourself referring to time and time again. Originally published in the 1970’s, it was re-published in 1996 because of popular demand. There’s nothing else like it on the market and Fisch is a real pioneer in conceptualizing this massive resource for wire art jewelers.
The book explains that using textile (cloth) techniques for jewelry is historic and gives a brief history in the beginning of the book. Of course, basic materials, tools and processes are also covered early on quite thoroughly.
The majority of the book is devoted to explaining weaving, knitting, crocheting, braiding, basketry, knots and knotting and interlinking forms, sprang and bobbin lace techniques. Again, one of the best things about this book is the magnificent number of pictures showing multiple close up shots of the various techniques. As if that weren’t enough, the gallery has 40 full color pages of amazing, simply amazing, pictures of woven wire jewelry all using textile techniques in metal. Under each jewelry piece in the gallery is a small description of the technique and the type of wire used to create it. Invaluable.
